Although many of us are aware of the side effects of fast fashion and have heard the horror stories of the 2013 Savar building collapse, our rejection of these brands has often been very little. This lack of rejection is understandable considering the perception that consumers don’t have many alternative options. However, there are many options out there and at times it seems like they’ve been hidden away. Here is my top three favourites:
Staud
Staud is a newly founded company located in downtown Los Angeles. The brand functions on a dual design process, the company providing on trend silhouettes and leaving customizable options for the consumer. This ability to customise allows for garments to be more in conjunction with quality rather than bulk manufacturing of a certain product. Options for customisation include various colours, length, sleeves or no sleeves, etc.
Matt and Nat
Substituting animal leather for polyurethane (a type of sustainable material), Matt and Nat provide stylish bags and accessories for those who show interest in protecting the environment. Their backpacks in particular have earned a reputation for combining classical beauty with modern techniques that ensure a well made product.
The Reformation
Undoubtedly one of the coolest environmentally friendly brands that currently exist, the Reformation has achieved great status for their clothes that never fail to make the most dorky of us look chic. With every item you also know the impact its had on the environment and where the fabric has been sourced from, kind of like finding out the calories and ingredients in your food but without the guilt!
